FIAT 500L - Fiat 500L tickover - Marko1959

I have a Fiat 500L I bought from the Car People on a 15 plate. It ticks over at 1250rpn with the air con on and 1000rpm without. The Car People say there is a soft where fault and take it back to fiat as it's still under warranty. Fiat say it's normal, I don't think it is, anyone any ideas.

So ,is it actually ticking over too fast ,or is the rev counter inaccurate?

No defo to fast but even so to jump 250rpm when you put the aircon on sounds wrong

I believe the compressor takes around 5bhp to run. The little engine in the 500 needs to rev higher to make this additional power

The 2 litre engine in my car has a noticeable change of sound and slight dip when the A.C. engages, but I guess is big enough to have the spare power/torque at idle RPM.

It's a 1.6 diesel and i"d expect a slight dip in revs but a rise of 250rpm is just odd, i've had loads of cars with aircon including my Aygo 1000 and it's never happened before.

I would take it to a different dealer for a second opinion as it doesn't sound right to me.

Yes that's what i'll do

The rev rise at first seems counterintuitive - any aircon effect I've noticed on my cars has been a slight drop. It would irritate me if it rose. However I think mss1tw has hit the nail on the head in terms of how the 500 deals with the power issue and the rev rise may be normal in this instance.

I've done a couple of minutes googling and there are indirect references on Fiat sites to 500 and other Fiat diesels reving higher at idle when aircon is engaged. None suggests its a problem but they don't go into much detail - one suggests the software adapts to your driving style and settles down after a few weeks. Sounds unlikely to me though.

Sorry I couldn't save the links but Marko might find out if its a real problem or an annoying case of "they all do that" if they search the specialist Fiat/500 forums.
