Modeo TDCI 130 6 speed manual - Are these oils suitable for my Mondeo Please. - William Tell

I'm new, thanks for your help in advance. A friend has offered to service my Mondeo for me, I'm old if I get the bits. I have Crossland fuel filter and oil filters.

The mileage is 71k The year registered is 2006 made 2005.

I was completely confused by all the choices and different info given by different companies Ford, Europarts Halfords so I chose cheaper options.

Is thinner oil better?

The engine oil I have is Synplus Triple QX 5w30 fully syn.

It states API SL1/CF ACEA A1/B1-12 and A5 /B5-12.

I'm confused is it B1 or B5 or both and is Fully Syn correct. Is the oil correct.

It's never had the gearbox oil changed the manual says at 50.000kmh

Second gear can be a little stiff when cold but warm is fine.

Comma MVMTF 75W-90 Fully Syn API GL-4 the gear box

Do these two oils meet the correct spec and would other brands be better at more money or should I go to a garage for a service and pay more.

Nightmare Cheers Willey

The owners manual should specify what API viscosity (eg 5W-30) and ACEA grade (eg ACEA-A1).

Where an oil is labelled "ACEA A1/B1-12 and A5 /B5-12" it means it meets all of the A1, A5, B1 and B5 grades (A5 meets both A1 and A3 and B5 meets B1, B3 and B4) - A grades are for petrols, B grades for diesels, C grades for both.

Many Thanks,

I have looked in the manual and it does not specifytransmission fluid. Ford were able to supply 5 litres at £50 in King's Lynn but apart fom the part number and that it was 85W90 no other info was available.

I mentioned I had read a newer oil was now recommended by Ford and was told it's not available yet. I do know it's been available for quite some time!!

Thank you for your help though at least I know a bit more. I thought B1 was the minimum grade and B5 was the best grade so it quoting both confused.

I would be grateful for more opinions please regarding the gear oil quality and if anyone has used the Synplus QX 5x30 engine oil good pr bad.

The oil choices are ok spec wise, as for make you pays your money and makes your choice.

I would have gone for either genuine filters or a well regarded aftermarket make such as Mann and Hummell, or similar.

As for who does the job, it shouldn't need any special techniques or equipment, like some German makes where the gearbox oil change is main dealer or very well and expensively equipped specialist indy only (kerching), if your mate is a handy home mechanic fire away...don't forger to service the brakes proper like, if he does that you'll be far better off than at the average main dealer where they won't.

edit, you've already got Comma's syth sorted for the box and that will be fine.

Thanks to the new message author.

I have a touch of Dimentia so tend to lose my track. I thought that was a good make of after market filters.

I looked at lots of gear box oil varying in price and name and the Fully Syn gear box oil from Comma was at least £10 a bottle cheaper.

I am quite happy to return the bits for a refund and just take the thing to a garage if anyone here say's I have the wrong articles.

Thanks Willey

I believe that the Crossland brand name now belongs to ECP who use it on their own cheap filters. I wouldn't use them myself.

The Triple QX oils are ECP's own brand oil range but, several of them are approved by vehicle manufacturers so they must have been tested by said manufacturers.

Thanks Wacky Buddy,

I was tempted to swap filters and engine oil at Euro car parts after perusing again, Mann Oil filters not fuel filters are available as suggested about 30p more so using the adidge you get what you pay for I can't see how it matters.

I am a little frusrated when an oil company markets an specific oil like for a Mondeoand they sell it in 4 litres £26.66 and 1 litres £9.79 knowing a Mondeo takes six litres. That's Castrol Magnatec my other choice 5W30 in 4 litres bottles. I guess they hope folk will buy two of 4 litres.

I'm sure Triple QX and Crosland and Euro CP's are very closely related as there are is lots of info on these and first on the site too but little on others.

I see now the bank holiday is over other oils have appeard now. I won't buy Castrol because of above that leaves Shell Helix HX7 pro AF 5W30 5 litres £19.99 also at the same price Ultra Pro same other spec. Five litres!! plus an extra litre at £7 something I've forgotten.

So how good is Shell Helix and which one Pro or Ultra Pro.

This reminds me of Weatherspoons, I like Abbot, when they have a Real Ale event, Abbot disappears reappearing when the event is over.

I just like Abbot in Pints thanks.

Why don't you go to a Ford dealer and get the correct filters. They are not expensive and they will defo be the correct parts for the car.I think crossland filters are made out of old copies of the "Sun"

Crosland used to be highly regarded, made in Notttingham as i recall when they were.

We all have different ideas of oils, i don't go in for the buy just enough to do the job, the extra you get with 2 x 5 litre packs isn't going to go flat like a beer.:-) it'll still be there for next service, my own choices tend to be Morris, Fuchs, Millers in no particular order, bought in bulk packs when a bargain appears.

All oils are not the same, how good they are after several thousand miles differs, i've had good service from those makes and see no reason to change, if those weren't available i'd rather have something like Shell or some other oil company's product, but thats just me.

Today my friend is servicing my Mondeo.

I've thpought over what has been advised and this morning contacted the company who have alraedy suppled the Crosland filter and QX oil and arranged to swap for a Mann filter and Castrol Magnatech Fully Syn two times 4 litre's, just what yesterday I said I wouldn't do.

Really the same as my friend above has suggested. I giuess the extra to pay will be roughly £20 as you say I'll have an extra spare two litres for next time needing only to buy one 4 litre bottle.

Actually oil does have a life of Five years when opened which like a camb belt, could possibly going to let you down.

Anyway being on here has been good I received sound advice and now I'm more confident of saving money and not regretting it afte, like most old folk do.

Penny wise and pound foolish.

Cheers Hopefully I won't be back soon LOL
