Volvo XC90 - They've got the wrong number plate - OS7

Hi,

October - in London, I some how managed to scrape a bus in standstill traffic. Bus had hardly any visible damage. I took no pictures.

Come January, BLM a law firm based in Manchester contacted me stating I'd hit a bus (fair play) and that they were seeking £400 (totally unreasonable) from my insurers. They'd got my number plate wrong and I told them to go away as I wasn't the driver of the vehicle of that particular registration numberplate.

4 months down the line and they're back in touch. They are asking for my car registration number.

They've attached an accident form the bus driver must have completed when he got back to base (not signed nor seen by me - though it had my correct name and address, but wrong number plate). They've also attached a picture from a CCTV camera, which doesn't show my number plate.

I'm not a dishonest person, but this is so unreasonable it's laughable.

They've quoted law that I have to legally tell them my number plate or its a criminal offence etc.

Anyone out there reckon I stand a chance deflecting this back to them, or am I wasting my time?

You have just admitted on a public forum that you hit the bus.

In what way is it fair that you try to avoid responsibility for your actions?

Chill out.. I'm just asking for a bit of advise. In the same way as someone who gets a parking ticket and the parking attendant pencils in the incorrect number plate does.

Well my advice is to man up and pay for what you have done.

BTW I am quite chilled!!

You admit you hit the bus. I guess they have your details because you exchanged them with bus driver at time.

If you think £400 is unreasonable then contest it and offer an alternative.

PLaying silly bu**ers about your registration number just invites the to add legal costs on top of £400.

But they havent got the wrong driver!!

Personally I cant abide drivers who try to dodge their responsibilities, lets hope no one decides to copy this email to every bus company in London.

m not a dishonest person, but this is so unreasonable it's laughable.

You have admited you crashed into the bus so why try and get out of paying due to the bus driver taking a number down worong? By any means dispute what they want to pay but can see why you want to wriggle out of your responsibilities.

Buses are expensive to fix! When my bus was hit a few years ago, to replace a cracked trim around the headlight cost £260. £30 for the part, plus paint, plus fitting, plus charges for vehicle unscheduled downtime, plus VAT.......minor damage can be suprisingly expensive.

If you choose to contest this and it ends up in court, the bus company will very likely have cctv footage on hand to back them up. I should pay up, before you get landed with a legal bill that could easily be more than the origional bill for damage!

Yes, I think that would be a waste of time - mainly because nowadays £400 is an amazingly small amount for any sort of body damge to a vehicle. Pay up and be glad it's no higher.
