Peugeot 308 SW - Squeaking Noise - Ben82

Hi,

I have a 2010 Peugeot 308 SW and for the past few months have noticed a strange squeaking noise after I drive for a while, when it's going over little bumps in the road or even when stopping and closing the rear doors or the boot.

It only happens after the car had run for about 10 miles or so and then suddenly stops again after the car has cooled down for about 10 minutes. It almost sounds like a metallic chirping noise and comes from the rear region, underneath the car.

I first noticed it after I got the tyres changed, but that could just be a coincidence.

I already removed the spare wheel from underneath the car to rule that out and the noise is still there.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,

Ben

Npt sure if links work here, but I managed to get a recording of the noise. You can first hear the boot closing andthen the chirping sound:

All I could hear was a 'clonck' unless its a very high frequency sqeak that I can't hear. Does it still do it when driving in the rain?

It's directly after the clonck. It sounds like a metallic, squeaking sound, really hard to describe.

I don't think I've heard it when driving in the rain. It's also much worse when the temperature outside is higher. It's not been that bad the past few months in the cold, only after quite long drives.

It was raining earlier so I had a chance to pay attention to it and it's definitely also when it's raining.

Somebody suggested checking the tailpipe for rubbing against a bracket, but I've checked it and it's not that either.

If it didn't do it when wet I would have suspected a rubber bush. I would suggest you get someone to sit in the back with the windows open.

Maybe try rattling the silencer to see is something is loose in it.. and tapping it underneath too

or look the other side of the silencer box (engine side) and wiggle the middle pipe & feel for exhaust leaks.

Mine made a strange noise at low revs , for a second or two..
.and it turned out the exhaust had split..

it was all crumbling inside

this was (one of ) the noises it made..

btw, I'm only completely guessing ..

I would be tempted to bring it into kwik fit for a free quick once over.... just to be able to see underneath it & to rule out a loose exhaust fitting..

ps I can't hear the noise either
(...but it's late and I don't want to turn the volume up max.)

Hi, I know this an old post. But do you remember what was the cause of the issue in the end? My car is doing the exact same thing and struggling to find the fault.

I would look at all the exhaust system and mounts first. The rear silencer on the 207SW is attached by a mild-steel strap which easily rusts through. A stainless one is easy to find on the web and fit DiY.
