Alfa Romeo 156 s Sedan 2.5l V6 Automatic - Purchasing a 1999 Alfa Romeo 156s - TegsPal

Hello,

I am considering purchasing a 1999 Alfa Romeo 156 s Sedan with automatic tranmsmission. Mileage is 40,000.

Can anyone advise of key areas to inspect (for this year and model) prior to purchase and also of any major difficulties with servicing such as cam belt?

Thanks,

TegsPal :)

Lots of info here;www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/alfa-romeo/156-1998/ Cambelt is critical,if it fails ,it is goodbye engine.

Cam belt change covered in Car Mechanics- Takes a day for experienced mechanic and special tools.

Also check suspension for crashing and bumps as some bushes are VERY difficult to change.

Pay peanuts and drive it till a big bill and scrap it is my advice.

Pay a lot and prepare for big bills when it goes wrong.. (it will).. and wish you had paid less.

Yup. When / if you go and look at it, keep one thought in the front of your mind.

"It is a 16 year old car, and is one fault from the scrapyard"

Pay accordingly.

Thanks everyone for your responses and advice. I'm currently having an estimate prepared for timing belt, idlers, tensioners, water pump with steel impeller and front suspension bushings. I think I could manage subsequent cambelt changes myself, the special tools and camlocks are not too expensive when you consider the labour savings from a specialist.

Unfortunately, I can't buy one for peanuts, I know they're inexpensive in Britain but I'm now in Canada and they're a sought after import.

My research indicates that the 2.5 L is reliable if the cambelt is looked after and its fequency for changing is not quite as often as the Twin Spark.

Anyway, I'm waiting for the quote for the timing belt and ancillary work and then I will try to use that in negotiating a purchase price.

Thanks again, the speedy replies and interest are much appreciated. Enjoy the weekend.
