Lti tx1/2 or 4 - Black cab LTI TX1/2 as a private car - leef

Hi all,

Just wondered the backroomers opinion on getting a ussed a black cab and using it for private use. I personally love the black cab and if I wasn't in my current profession or ever leave it, I'll complete 180 and I'd be driving a black cab!

I've had a little look around the 'net and seen a couple of articles on this. I live just ouside of Manchester now and wondered if anyone knew where to purchase a black cab from. What should i look out for? I heard the nissan engines can easily do 500,000 miles if looked after.

The plus i've got 2 young kids, so buggies etc would be really easy, my old man is in a wheelchair and its a pain getting him about in my current motor, and I really want one! Would be willing to spend about 7/8k. any advise?, anyone ever done this?

thanks in advance

Lee

Blak Cabs normally only come onto the open market when they are at the end of their working life i.e. totally knackered. The engine might still be OK but the remainder could well be falling apart.

Be very careful.

Think about safety , crash tests, and noise on motorways..

There is one round here with metallic black finish and super sound system in privat use. Looks quite smart..

Normally sold via TAXI garages be warned very low milage for examples mean around 100K and servicing normally via specialist Taxi garages and furthere they normally be sold plated.

Think the TX1 are a 2.7 nissan engine but svery unrefined and not very powerful hence a later migration to a 2.4 ford van engine(TXII).

Nice for passengers but not for the poor driver, unless having the wife sittling in the back is consider an advantage!!!

Be prepared for random passers-by getting into the back and demanding to be driven somewhere. Happened a lot to a friend who used to run one. Is a much more serious problem late on Friday or Saturday night!

Indeed, that would anger me. I'd have to have doors always locked.

After a bit more research, it seems the TX1 are the favoured "used" cab as they have the Nissan engine. The TX2's it seems were rush jobs and they couldn't get a proper replacment engine so had to beg Ford for there 2.4 Diesel Transit engine that wasn't refinded or tested for cabs and numerous problems followed. Drivers of TX2's then resorted to buying old Nissan engines from TX1's.

Cheers

back in the early 90s I left a club in Wandsworth in the small hours and got into a black cab. Only half way home did I realise it was a former black cab that some dodgy bloke had got hold of. My suspicions were aroused when I saw he was holding the driver door closed with a short bungy rope. I then realised there was no meter. Still, he got me home for a reasonable sum and off he went. South London was crawling with illegal minicabs in those days, but I'd never seen a illegal black cab before or since. Shouldn't imgine his enterprise lasted long.

So if someone does jump in the back of your former black cab, you might ask where they are going before you turf them out - it might be on your way. Give them a bit of "alright darlin' " patter and they'll be none the wiser. :-)

The autos are lovely drives IMO, surprisingly compliant ride too on those narrow high sidewall tyres, which look too small to support the weight of the things but obviously well up to the job, rolled black cabs are not exactly thick on the ground, but don't expect modern traction control systems or to be throwing it about on wet roads like a hot hatch.

Corrosion is a biggy, the chassis is strong but not well painted at all, and unfortunately i suspect few will have been subject to any extra rustproofing.

I carried lots of them, new and used, would suggest looking for an auto as its more likely to have been a London cab, IMHO the London cabs i've shifted used have been in better condition than the Manc and Glasgow fleets where more manuals are sent, plus the London fleets are likely to have seen less road salt overall.

I seem to recall that cities outside London which still use black cabs (e.g. Manchester) tend to be the place where London black cabs are sent after they have done sterling service in the Smoke. Might have changed now of course.
