BMW 1 Series - Gap Insurance - Who to go with - LeeLee87
Hi all,

I'm waiting for my new 120d M Sport to be built and was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction regarding GAP insurance.

I've been reading about some horror stories when it comes to GAP insurance whereby the company appears to be legitimate however, when their "net worth" was researched they only have £500 in the bank.

So for my new car, so I go with the one BMW are offering or source my own - have you guys got any good suggestions for companies that offer the same service but at a cheaper premium?

Cheers,
Lee.

You will undoubtedly find GAP insurance far cheaper than anything your supplying dealer offers.

Go Compare have a useful primer on the subject on their website:

I'm using Ala next, half price of dealer with same cover.

I have no experience of how well they deal with claims.

I went with ALA too

Note : there are owners forums ( i think the 1-series one is babybmw.net or something similar). If you mention that you are a member of such forum then a 10% discount is usually forthcoming.

We bought a £34k (list price) Z4 last year. I believe 4 yrs cover (for list price, not the £7k discounted price we paid) was something like £280. So if it gets stolen, written off, etc in those 4 years, we get a cheque for £34k. It ignores depreciation.

Strictly speaking you get two cheques. One from your insurer for 'market value' and another from the GAP insurer to top that sum up to £34k.

Check your insurance policy too. My insurer gives like for like replacement on a new car for first year.

That's important! No point buying GAP insurance for that year.

I bought 3 years Gap deferred for the first year as I was aware that all comprehensive car insurance replaces a new car for the first year. Don't buy from the dealer go direct or via a broker. I spent about a third of what the dealer wanted. Product was termed Deferred RTI which stands for return to invoice. Incidentally the Lloyds Syndicate that I worked for at the time wrote this class of business and I know the huge commission rates that the dealers enjoy.

But if you want to splurge your cash away for no reason who am I to stop you.

Are you sure all new cars with comprehensive cover are replaced with new during the first year, when depreciation is at it highest?

No - only some insurers - I'd guess that the very cheapest omit it to save money.

GAP insurance is a way of giving a dealer a load of money for no good reason IMHO.

Insurer with care and get a new car if under 1 year old use some off the money you would have spent on GAP insurance.

So if you had a rightoff after 2 years then you will have enough money to buy a 2 year old car. Which is whay you had lost. So no benefit at all

Further most likely if you purchased on credit, The insurance company will have paid the lease company anyway, so your going to need a new lease/credit deal.

I have never thought of it like that, but actually, you've hit the nail on the head. In effect, GAP insurance is just a nice tool to get you in a position where you clear the finance and go in to another deal without being in neg eq.

Bought GAP through GAP123 for my Leon and the wifes Note.

Paid for 4 years with the first year deferred so get 5 years cover in total.

Its back to invoice cover, replacement with new was slightly more expensive.

Cost about £120 for each car which was 1/3rd of dealer price for longer cover.

Never had it before but since wife is now retired and I plan to retire later this year money will become tighter and risks need to be covered where the cost is reasonable.

All these policies exclude dangerous driving, drink driving etc so the idiots don't get a penny (hopefully).

NFU insurance cover replacement with new identical car for two years (check, cos its been a few years since i was with them), which if there's little in the premium is a bonus.
