Had this vehicle 5 years and it has always been sensitive to fuel filters. It will cut out but always restart immediately then run for another few miles before it happens again, this can also happen going around left hand sharp bends. It also only runs properly if the fuel filler cap is not tightened fully, always assumed the breather is blocked but not a major issue.
A filter change cures the problem....... until now.
It now cuts out if I try to rev above 2000 rpm or put any load on it eg.going up a hill ,but again always restarting .
Filter change has had no effect, and running it from a separate fuel source incase the fuel lines/tank is the problem has also failed to cure it.
I read a thread on here about someone with a older model 2.5 with a near identical problem.
The cure was to locate and clean the micro line filter in the pump.......so does anyone know if the pump on my 3.0 dura tech engine has a similar filter ? Or can advise if the fault lies else where?
It's worth mentioning that currently it will still accelerate to 70 mph down hill as long as I don't push the throttle beyond the point that it cuts out , if that makes sense.

Is there a strainer on the fuel pick in the tank, or a pre filter situated inside i wonder?
|
Yes, always wondered that too, but to rule out the tank etc being the culprit I have tried feeding the engine from a separate fuel container , but unfortunately that has not cureed the problem.
And I think I must have drained the tank previously at least 5 times before resolving to just leaving the filler cap loose and changing the filter every couple of months.

In that case i wonder if there is a pre pump in the tank?
Have you had a poke nose see if the sender/pick up unit is an easy access job, if so it might be worth whipping the thing out and have a look see.

If you ran it with a slave seperate fuel supply and there was no change then forget the tank and anything in it.
Now my question is "where did you run the slave tank to?"
I'm guessing the input to the fuel filter?
Yes?
|
Yes indeed, but just before I did that I tried bi passing the main filter connecting the in and out lines to a new inline filter.....made no difference so unless I have multiple problems I don't think the filter unit or filter is the problem.

Remove the fuel inlet supply pipe to the pump. Some of these have a micro filter that can get clogged up.Worth a look.
|
Is that on the pump casing under the banjo bolt holding on the inlet pipe ?
|
Sounds like a dirty MAF sensor.

Well' I got up this morning not looking forward to working out in the snow knowing that I would be wasting my time and Its probably time to look for another vehicle, but it's worth one last try.
Removing the banjo bolt was easy enough.
And there pressed into the bottom I could see a brass insert, this is a tight fit and impossible to remove.
I could get air to flow through it by sucking on the end but there was some resistance.
So I put it in some petrol and tapped both ends, initially no debris came out.......then slowly very very fine particles started to appear.
Now I could suck air through it very easily !
Starting after reassembly the first unusual thing that happened was the management light extinguished immediately, normally after changing the filter it would take a few cycles of driving before it would happen.
So , although i don't like to tempt fate, I do believe this has been the fault all along. And a fresh filter ( and loosening the fuller cap, will try tighening this now) was previously just offering a little less resistance to fuel flowing through the partially blocked banjo until it was blocked almost totally.
This fault has plagued me for over 50k miles and 6 years of ownership , and one expensive visit to a diesel specialist, who could not replicate the fault !
Thank you for everyone's input .
I just might try the lottery tonight !
