Ford Fiesta (2008 – 2013) Review
Ford Fiesta (2008 – 2013) At A Glance
The Ford Fiesta is a stylish and well built car that leads the way among small hatchbacks. No car this size manages to match its all round abilities, from the keen handling to its refined interior and stylish looks. It really does have it all. In fact, it's so good, the Ford Fiesta is a genuine rival to larger hatchbacks in the class above.
On the road, the Fiesta feels like a much larger car than it is. The handling is composed and neat, helped by great steering, while the high-quality ride soaks up uneven and bumpy roads with minimal fuss. It's a revelation on the motorway where it's amazingly quiet and stable, so - unlike some other small cars of this size - long journeys needn't be tiring.
If you're downsizing from a larger car, the Fiesta is a great choice. The interior is way ahead of the competition with a stylish but user-friendly design, the highlight of which is the stylish central console that houses the stereo and simple ventilation controls. The seats offer plenty of support and there's plenty of adjustment so even taller drivers will find the perfect driving position. However, one criticism is that rear headroom is somewhat limited.
There's a good choice of engines though from the entry-level 1.25-litre petrol up to the 120bhp 1.6-litre which is the quickest version. But for economy, the ECOnetic model steals the show thanks to claimed fuel economy of 76.3mpg and free road tax. There are plenty of clever innovations too such as 'stall prevention', a neat feature that increases revs in low speed manoeuvres and means you won't find yourself caught out at the traffic lights.
Ford Fiesta (2008 – 2013) handling and engines
- Engines range from 1.25 82 to 1.6
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 26–78 mpg
Instead of making the new Fiesta immensely versatile, Ford has concentrated on making it extraordinarily good to drive, particularly the high end versions. The car has electric power steering with ‘camber compensation' and on narrower tyres there isn't much steering feel. It still hangs on brilliantly, but it's at its best in Titanium trim with 195/45 R16s that make it beautifully smooth and fluid without wrecking the ride quality. Go one stage more sporty to the Zetec S and you'll be able to corner a bit more quickly, but you'll also feel the bumps more.
All the engines in the Fiesta range are economical although the 1.25-litre entry-level engine isn't the quickest around, especially the basic 60bhp version. The 82bhp is a bit better but most people will prefer the 1.4-litre petrol with 96bhp. It's quiet, smooth and according to the official economy figures can average 48.7mpg. And if you're after a Fiesta with an automatic gearbox - this is the only engine choice. It's not a a CVT or a ‘Durashift' automated manual but instead a proper four-speed torque converter.
The top petrol is the 1.6 Ti-VCT which is smooth but low geared and consquently doesn't feel like it has 120bhp. And though 139g/km so a reasonable £110 tax next year, you'll pay at the pumps. We only saw 35mpg, and that wasn't pushing it.
In contrast the 90bhp 1.6 TDCI diesel feels made for the car. It's flexible, with some (though not a lot) of torque from 1000rpm. It's good on the motorway too and will effortlessly cruise at 70mph. We got 47mpg in test conditions, so you can expect 60 in normal use. And it even has some character.
This engine is also fitted to the 99g/km ECOnetic version of the car that hits the headlines by qualifying for ‘free' VED ‘road tax'. But to do this it comes on skinny little wheels. Since part of the secret of economy motoring is maintaining momentum, it could well be that in real life the £20 a year tax Titanium or Zetec S will make your fuel go further.
The ECOnetic sits on low rolling resistance tyres, in this case 175/65 R14s and is actually better for them. It rides and grips very well and there are no worries about how it handles on the relatively skinny rubber. Driving along at a modest pace, it's very pleasant and exceptionally refined for a small car, marred only by some noise from the transmission due to the low friction oil.
A green arrow pops up on the speedo at between 1500rpm and 2200rpm suggesting you change up for the sake of economy and paying heed to this, we averaged a creditable 63.2mpg. Some way short of the certificated 76.3mpg, but probably closer to reality. Lastly, but not leastly, you won't be able to misfuel a new Fiesta because they come with the capless Easyfuel system that won't let you put petrol in a diesel.

To get people out of big cars and inside smaller cars you have to make them special inside. Ambiance is everything and dominating the dash of the Fiesta is an extraordinary voice-activated Bluetooth sound system, intuitively laid out like a mobile phone. On the left you have buttons for CD, radio, aux, phone and menu. On the right, number buttons for the phone. Shuffle and scan buttons underneath.
You can hook up your iPod through the aux jack below, or simply insert a £10 memory stick with 2,000 tracks on it and the system will search and display all the folders and titles. The sound quality is excellent too. In fact this system has proved so good, it's also been fitted to the new Focus. It's high up, centre dash with a line-of-sight display screen for minimum distraction. Even the main heating and ventilation controls are simple knobs rather than multiple buttons so can be worked by feel rather than look.
There's a very nice, Honda-like, leather rim steering wheel on top versions, height and reach adjustable on all versions. All the trim is high quality and beautifully put together. If Audi made a car this size I doubt they'd have done a better job. Everything works with precision and feels well finished.
There's legroom and headroom inside the five-door for five passengers, although taller adults will find the back a little tight, but then what small car this size isn't. The seats themselves are comfortable and supportive too. The boot takes 295 litres and just a little bit less if you opt for the free optional spare wheel. But one shortcoming is that the back seats don't double-fold so you can't create a flat load deck like you can on a Honda Jazz for example. But you can't have everything.
Standard equipment from launch (October 2008):
Studio is the base level model and has an Intelligent Protection System featuring ABS, front, side and knee airbags, a CD player, central locking and power mirrors.
Style gets body-coloured bumpers, mirrors and door handles while inside there's an upgraded four-speaker sound system, power front windows and remote central locking.
Style+ upgrades the Style trim with Ford's Quickclear' heated windscreen and air conditioning.
Zetec is the most popular choice and comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, leather steering wheel, chrome grille, chrome bodywork detailing and interior "aesthetic lighting".
Zetec S has 16-inch alloy wheels and boasts a deeper front bumper, side mouldings, a rear spoiler and sports-tuned suspension.
Titanium is the luxury trim and gets 16-inch alloys, Electronic Temperature Control, privacy glass, cruise control, automatic headlamps, automatic wipers, power folding mirrors and carpet mats.
ECOnetic is the economical model and comes with lowered suspension, low rolling resistance tyres and a specially calibrated Duratorq 1.6-litre TDCi engine.
S1600 is the 'sporty' version and has alloy pedals, Quickclear windscreen, stitched leather sports seats with standard side-airbags, leather steering wheel, handbrake cover and gearknob, plus Motorsport-branded floor mats and scuff plates. Body-styling kit includes a unique front bumper with flared lower valence panel, extended side skirts, large rear spoiler and rear diffuser, finished with 17-inch white alloy wheels (16-inch on diesel models). Special paint finish is available in Frozen White or Performance Blue, with contrasting motorsport stripes.
From April 2010 all new Fiesta models come with ESP as standard.

14” steel wheels with 175/65 R14 tyres
15” steel or alloy wheels with 195/60 R15 tyres
16” alloy wheels with 195/45 R16 tyres
17” alloy wheels with 205/40 R17 tyres
Optional spare wheel 5.5 x 14" with 175/65 R 14
The Ford Convers+ system - already available on the Ford Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy - will feature. It's one of several new features and technologies, including keyless vehicle technology symbolised by the distinctive 'Ford Power' button on the instrument panel.
Connectivity is another new Fiesta strength. The new centre console features a convenient tray for MP3 players complete with built-in sockets for an auxiliary (AUX) audio and USB cables, along with the traditional 12 volt outlet. This allows the car's audio system to control and charge the MP3 player. Bluetooth connectivity with voice control is also offered in the new Fiesta, along with more big-car technologies.
1.25-litre (60 and 80PS) and 1.4-litre (91PS) Duratec petrol units are joined by a new Duratec 1.6-litre Ti-VCT (115PS) option. This advanced powertrain provides an additional 15PS over the outgoing model but, thanks to variable valve timing, with no fuel consumption penalty. Ford's TDCi common-rail diesel engines will continue to be offered in 1.4-litre (68PS) and 1.6-litre (90PS) guises. Later in 2008 a Fiesta ECOnetic with CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km will become available.
From launch, all Fiestas will be equipped with the slick Ford Durashift five-speed manual transmission, and a four-speed automatic transmission will be available on selected models. New Fiesta retains the MacPherson strut front suspension and twist-beam rear suspension layout that has been one of its traditional strengths, but the new suspension and steering system has undergone significant development. It has an impressively quiet drive for a small car.
Electric-Power Assist Steering (E-PAS) is introduced in the Fiesta for the first time. E-PAS provides the right balance of low-speed assistance and excellent feel and responsiveness. Three-door and five-door models available from October 2008
July 2008
All-new sporty Zetec S completes new Fiesta range. New 120PS Duratec Ti-VCT petrol engine. Performance and efficiency: 0-60mph in 9.6sec, with 47.9mpg and 139g/km CO2. Debut at London Motor Show. On sale from October 2008.
The frugal Fiesta ECOnetic also receives its world premiere in London, a city where its ultra-low, 98g/km CO2 rating will be exempt it from UK road fund duty. This car is certificated at 76.3mpg.
Crucially, diesels are not fitted with dual mass flywheels.

June 2009
Durashift 4-speed torque converter automatic announced, matched to the Fiesta’s new 1.4-litre, 96PS Duratec petrol engine. Does 0-60mph in 13.6 sec, while delivering 43.4mpg and a CO2 rating of 154g/km on the EU combined driving cycle. Development work has refined the Ford Fiesta’s accelerator pedal response and created a sporty driving quality, present even with the automatic transmission. The car’s electronic throttle is tuned to respond differently, depending on how much and how sharply it is applied. More aggressive throttle inputs generate a sharper, sportier response, while gentle throttle inputs deliver a smoother, progressive feel. The 1.4-litre automatic is offered with Style+, Zetec and Titanium trim, at list prices from £13,195.
Range "realigned" October 2009. Now Studio, Edge, ECOnetic, Zetec, Titanium and Zetec S and 1.25, 1.4 or 1.6 petrol or 1.6 diesel engines. Edge and ECOnetic now have standard a/c. Titanium Individual models come with smart leather seats, from £15,145 for 1.4 3-dr.
April 2010
All new Fiestas have Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) as standard Bringing Fiesta in line with Ford's large and medium car line-ups. ESP previously cost around £300. Studio series get heated door mirrors and an in-car entertainment bonus of remote steering-mounted controls, aux-in jack and two additional speakers. Top-of-the-range Titanium models now have Bluetooth and USB connection as standard, worth around £200. A sophisticated new colour, Ink Blue, is also now available across all models.
Engines change to new Euro Stage V emission levels, with all diesels fitted with diesel particulate filters (DPF) and on all series including the 98gCO 2 /km ECOnetic. Diesel engine power goes up by 5PS to 95PS for the 1.6-litre TDCi with DPF. From August 2010 the latest Stage V engine tuning takes the Fiesta 1.4-litre TDCi with DPF up 2PS to 70PS.
Three petrol engines see a reduction in CO 2 emissions:
- 1.25-litre 82PS reduced by 4g to 129g
- 1.6-litre 95PS reduced by 3g to 107g
- 1.6-litre Ti-VCT 120PS reduced by 5g to 134g
For the 1.25-litre engine, 129g/km emissions puts the Ford Fiesta into a lower VED band, resulting in an annual saving of £110.
April 2010

Britain's best-selling small car, the Ford Fiesta, continues to expand its appeal with the launch of an exciting new special edition, the "Centura", which builds on the most popular model and engine choice in the UK.
The Centura celebrates the 100th anniversary of Ford in Britain, and, available exclusively in black, it pays tribute to the first Ford vehicles to be manufactured in the UK, the Model T in 1911.
Based on the Ford Fiesta Zetec, the Centura boasts a comprehensive list of additional standard equipment valued at £1,800, including metallic Panther Black paint, chrome mirror and door caps, LED daylight running lights, 16-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels, automatic headlamps and windscreen wipers, reverse parking sensors and a parking camera screen mounted in the rear view mirror.
Just 1,000 Ford Fiesta Centura special editions will be available, priced at £13,395 for the three-door version and £13,995 for the five-door. The Ford Fiesta remains the UK's best-selling car with 52,327 sold in the first half of this year.
The Ford Fiesta Centura 1.25-litre 82PS petrol engine is exempt from vehicle excise duty in the first year.
March 2012
New high-tech developments have made Britain’s best-selling car and small van even cleaner with latest emissions dropping from 95 to 87g/km of CO2and combined fuel economy rising to 85.6mpg.
The significantly improved efficiency, boosting the environmental performance of the Fiesta and FiestaVan featuring Econetic Technology by over 12 per cent, has been achieved through the introduction of:
- Auto-Start-Stop
- Upgrades to the 95PS 1.6TDCi engine including friction and combustion improvements and calibration optimisation
- Revised gear ratios
- Smart regenerative charging
- EcoMode
- Improved efficiency of the air conditioning, cooling fan and alternator
Original equipment fitted as standard to the Fiesta and FiestaVan ECOnetic, including rolling resistance tyres, an aero pack comprising undershield and wheel deflectors, variable flow oil pump and shift indicator light, is carried over on ECOnetic Technology models.
Sustainability is important not only for the car, but also for the facilities behind its manufacture. Ford’s Dagenham-built Duratorq TDCi engines are produced in a facility that derives all its electricity from renewable sources, with three dedicated wind turbines.
The Ford Fiesta with ECOnetic Technology has three trim levels to suit different customer requirements: Edge, Zetec or Titanium. Such advanced fuel economy avoids UK road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty) contributions, yet the refinement and fun-to-drive personality of the original Fiesta is retained intact.
FordFiesta's value story continues with five engines in the Fiesta line-up emitting less than 130g/km of CO2 making them exempt from vehicle excise duty in their first year. This includes the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre TDCi diesel engines, the 1.25-litre 60PS and 82PS petrol engines and the latest 1.6-litre TDCi 95PS ECOnetic Technology engine.
What to watch out for
If buying from stock or buying used and you want a spare wheel, make sure the car has one.
Seems to be a potential locking problem. If you double lock by the remote key, then try to unlock manually with the key (which you might have to do if the battery fails) it is very hard indeed to turn the lock.
Body coloured plastic wheel arch protectors are subject to paint chipping.

14-03-2017:Clunky power steering of 2008 - 2013 Fiestas patiently explained by Alan Clooney in this excellent YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP6xxJtH9S0. The bearings in the upper CV joint just under the electric power steering motor appear to dry out, possibly due to the heat of the motor. The shaft can be removed using a Torx 12 socket at the top and a 12mm spanner at the bottom. Manipulating and re-greasing the upper CV joint bearings can free them off so the steering action is smooth again. (See 16-11-2013 and 18-4-2015.)

An engine management light has never switched on. Probably an injector fault.
24-12-2017:Report of exhaust valve of no 3 cyinder of 2011 Ford Fiesta 1.25 failing at 36k miles. Garage blamed bad fuel additives and the fuel mixture running too lean leading to excess heat. But this has happened before (20-7-2017 and 26-11-2015) and the culprit there was deemed to be a faulty spark plug.
