DS 9 Review 2024
DS 9 At A Glance
DS is the poshest of the Stellantis brands, which means it's in a unique position to offer a left-field alternative to the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Realistically, most buyers of these premium Germans won't give the French DS 9 a second look, but sales (however small) of the Genesis G80, Volvo S90 and Lexus ES suggest there is the appetite for something a little unusual.
The DS 9 is based on the same EMP2 platform as the Peugeot 508, but unique features like its theatrical headlights and fancy ‘Clous de Paris’ strip running up the bonnet are sure to turn heads. The sheer size of it helps here, too – it's nearly five metres long and more than two metres wide, meaning it has no shortage of road presence.
Although you can buy the DS 9 with a regular petrol engine (the same 1.6-litre Puretech you'll find in other Stellantis models), most will be sold with plug-in hybrid power. The regular DS 9 E-Tense 225 was replaced by the E-Tense 250 in 2022, but both do much the same thing – pairing the 1.6 petrol engine with an electric motor to provide adequate (if little more) performance and an electric-only range of up to 38 miles.
For the ultimate in, er, depreciation, however, you need to look at the range-topping DS 9 E-Tense 4x4 360. This actually starts life as a regular 250 before being shipped from China to DS Performance's base near Paris, where it's thoroughly overhauled with bespoke suspension, beefier brakes and an additional electric motor on the rear axle, turning the DS 9 into a four-wheel-drive super saloon. In theory.
The idea is that the brand uses its knowledge from Formula E to make a car that's fun to drive, not to mention pretty rapid. It's semi-successful: it'll accelerate to 62mph in 5.6 seconds. Not that it ever feels that quick, though, not helped by the stodgy automatic gearbox which seems to get confused when you mash the throttle.
The DS 9 corners well enough while, if you splash the cash on options, there are plenty of driver-assist features to keep you on the road. It's available with the same Night Vision feature that we first saw on the DS 7, which uses cameras and sensors to spot things in the road that you might miss in dark or difficult conditions.
The DS 9 feels pretty posh inside, helped by the watchstrap leather seats (part of the expensive but desirable Opera interior) and a fancy clock on the dash that spins around. It's not all that spacious, though, particularly for rear-seat passengers who'll wish you'd bought a BMW 5 Series instead. The infotainment isn't great, either, with below-par graphics and slow responses.
Prices for the DS 9 start from a little over £40,000, but you could easily spend more than £60,000 on a DS 9 E-Tense 4x4 360 Rivoli + with a few select options. You'd have to really, really not want an Audi A6 to do that, but the good news is that it won't be long before heavily discounted examples will be hitting the used market.
DS 9 handling and engines
- Engines range from E-Tense 225 to Puretech 225 EAT8
DS 9 2024: Handling and ride quality
It'd be an exaggeration to describe the DS 9 as a boat but, well, it certainly feels a bit floaty in corners. That's mainly down to the overly-assisted steering which doesn't really encourage rapid direction changes. It'll grip, though, especially the four-wheel-drive DS 9 E-Tense 360, and it doesn't roll about too much.
The ride is fairly comfortable, although it does depend on the size of the wheels and the suspension setup of each model. Buy a DS 9 Rivoli+ and you'll get the brand's clever Active Scan suspension, which uses cameras and sensors to monitor the road ahead and prepare each individual wheel for bumps in the road. It's not the best system – it's strange that a brand synonymous with comfort in the olden days struggles so much today, especially as sister brand Citroen has ride quality nailed.
DS 9 2024: Engines
The majority of DS 9s sold use plug-in hybrid power. When it first went on sale in 2021, the DS 9 was sold as the DS 9 E-Tense 225, pairing a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an 81kW electric motor and an 11.9kWh battery pack. The result was a car that could travel up to 33 miles under electric power alone, yet accelerate to 62mph in 8.3 seconds.
This was replaced fairly quickly by the DS 9 E-Tense 250, which has a bigger 15.6kWh battery pack providing an electric range of up to 43 miles. The power upgrade also means it can accelerate quicker, covering 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds.
If you want a genuinely quick DS 9, though, you'll need to look at the range-topping DS 9 E-Tense 4x4 Rivoli. This uses an extra motor mounted on the rear axle to provide a combined 360PS, taking it to 62mph in just 5.6 seconds.
Not that it really feels that quick. No DS 9 feels particularly sprightly, in fact, but what would you expect with a kerb weight of nearly 1900kg? The eight-speed EAT8 torque-converter automatic gearbox doesn't help, either, with stodgy downshifts and slow responses while the various power sources work out the best way to respond.
There is an entry-level petrol model badged the DS 9 Puretech 225. We've yet to drive this and it's expected to sell in very small numbers.
DS 9 2024: Safety
The DS 9 is offered with some genuinely innovative safety systems, so it's a bit of a shame that not all of it is standard across the range. Opt for the Advanced Safety Pack (£700 on Performance Line+ models and £250 on the DS 9 Rivoli+) and you get DS Drive Assist providing semi-autonomous driving, while the Driver Attention Monitoring system will let you know when it's time to take a braek.
The DS Night Vision is another cool feature, monitoring the road ahead when it's dark and displaying an image on the digital driver's display with any potential dangers (such as pedestrians or animals) outlined in yellow. This is a £1400 option on DS 9 Performance Line+ model and £1100 on the DS 9 Rivoli+.
You do get the usual myriad of airbags as standard in the DS 9, as well as Isofix mounting points on the rear outer seats and the front passenger seat.
The DS 9 is yet to be crash-tested by Euro NCAP.
DS 9 2024: Towing
The DS 9 might not be an obvious tow car but all models are rated to tow a braked trailer weighing up to 1200kg.

DS 9 2024: Practicality
The DS 9 is quite a big car on the outside, so it's surprising that it's not all that spacious inside. You'll be fine in the front, though, with plenty of electric adjustment in the seats and all the usual storage areas around the cabin. A panoramic sunroof is available as an optional extra but, as far as we noticed, eat into headspace too much.
Rear-seat passengers will find the space on offer to be sufficient if not a great deal more. Three adults will certainly find themselves rubbing shoulders with their peers, but how often do you carry three in the back anyway? A large central armrest drops down, while there's an acceptable amount of headroom.
The 510-litre boot sounds pretty big (and more than you'll get in a BMW 530e, for example) - but it's not that easy to access, with a relatively high lip. You can drop the rear seats but, on models with the massaging rear seats, the bench drops as one rather than splitting into two or three like we'd usually expect. That makes it a bit awkward to drop, and it doesn't provide an entirely flat load space, either.
DS 9 2024: Quality and finish
If you're splashing close to £60,000 on a flagship car from a relatively niche brand, you're going to have pretty high expectations when it comes to interior quality. And the DS 9 doesn't really satisfy in that regard.
It's not that the DS 9 feels cheap, but it certainly doesn't feel as well finished as a BMW 5 Series. There are some neat touches but, like with too many aspects of the DS 9, you'll have to pay for the most desirable features. The watchstrap leather looks pretty smart, for example, but you'll have to pay £3000 for the Opera interior for that.
DS 9 2024: Infotainment
The infotainment is standard Stellantis fare, unfortunately. While you might be able to overlook slightly below-par graphics and clumsy responses in a £20,000 Peugeot 208, it's not quite so acceptable in an expensive Mercedes E-Class rival.
Still, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, so you can just mirror apps from your phone instead of having to use the car's nav system. That's good until your passenger decides they're cold and tries to adjust the climate control, bringing a dedicated climate control menu up on the infotainment screen.
DS 9 value for money
DS 9 2024: Prices
The DS 9 starts from a little over £40,000 for a Performance Line+ model with the Puretech 225 petrol engine, while plug-in hybrid variants start from around £47,000. The flagship DS 9 E-Tense 4x4 360 starts from £54,100 in Performance Line+ trim and £57,200 as a range-topping Rivoli+.
That's pretty much in-line with rivals like the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class, which is a bold approach for a left-field brand like DS. You can save money by looking for a nearly-new model, though – even though the DS 9 is a niche choice, you can already saving four-figure sums by buying an ex-demonstrator example.
DS 9 2024: Running Costs
With its 38-mile range, the DS 9 E-Tense 250 is the economy star of the range. Officially it'll return up to 257mpg but – like all plug-in hybrids – that's because most of the official WLTP fuel economy test will be carried out under electric power. If you charge regularly and rarely venture further than 30 miles or so from home, the DS 9 will barely get through a litre of petrol. Use it for long journeys without charging and it'll be mightily less efficient.
The DS 9 E-Tense 4x4 360 has a 33-mile range and WLTP fuel economy figure of 157mpg. If you have no desire to charge a car, the standard Puretech 225 petrol should return up to 40.9mpg.

DS reveals new flagship DS 9 saloon
Based on EMP2 architecture, the DS 9 will be offered with plug-in hybrid power combining a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 225PS. Its 11.9kWh battery will mean it can travel between 25 and 31 miles under electric power alone.
Although UK specifications are yet to be announced, the global line-up will also include two more E-Tense power units – the first with 250PS, two-wheel drive plus increased range capability, and the second – a 360PS with an intelligent four-wheel drive transmission.
Thanks to its 2.9-metre wheelbase, the DS 9 will be just as spacious in the rear as the front, says the manufacturer. High quality materials are used including Alcantara roof lining, leather door handles and watchstrap seats.
Trick Active Scan Suspension uses a camera to monitor the road ahead, preparing the suspension and providing a smoother ride. Further technology includes DS Drive Assist, a level two semi-autonomous driving feature, as well as DS Park Pilot. It'll also be offered with Night Vision, as used on the DS 7.
UK specifications will be announced ahead of the DS 9 arriving in the UK late in 2020.
June 2021
DS 9 priced from £40,615
With a look that is both modern and which pays tribute to the legendary 1955 DS, the DS 9 is built on the newest version of the EMP2 platform and comes with a significant 2.90m wheelbase for increased passenger room and comfort. Available with a choice of two powertrains, and in PERFORMANCE LINE + and RIVOLI + trims, prices for the DS 9 start from £40,615 OTR.
The DS 9 sits on a new version of the Stellantis Group’s EMP2 platform – EMP2 V2.3, and measures 4.93m long, 1.93m wide and 1.46m tall, with a sleek and elegant profile. Thanks to the new platform, the E-segment DS 9 has a long, 2.90m wheelbase, which results in extended room for passengers inside.
With a raked fastback style roof and a streamlined silhouette, the DS 9 is an evolution of the DS Automobiles design language, with a powerful and expressive front end. The grille features a parametric three-dimensional diamond effect design that is framed by DS WINGS for a truly distinctive look.
The front lighting features DS ACTIVE LED VISION technology with modules that swivel through by 180-degrees, and ‘Pearl’ motif daytime running lights. On the bonnet, there is a distinctive ‘Clous de Paris’ guilloche strip – the first time this DS interior feature can be found on the exterior of the vehicle.
The all-new DS 9 also pays homage to the original 1955 DS. Inspired by the legendary saloon, the C-pillar features cone-shaped indicator lights. The side profile sees a single, taut line running from the headlights to the rear lights, highlighting the car’s sleek profile, while the rear comprises of a simple and pure design with every feature built into one piece.
The chiselled rear lights have the effect of scales, creating a contrast with the rest of the rear design to give a dramatic three-dimensional effect. They are also highlighted by side strips, a tribute to the French coachbuilders of the 1930s, while a third brake light at the rear window extends the visual effect when braking.
The all-new DS 9 is available in two trims from launch: PERFORMANCE LINE+ and RIVOLI+

DS RIVOLI+
Inspired by the Tuileries quarter in Paris, the DS 9 RIVOLI + gives buyers a choice between three different interior styles: a Basalt black leather interior, or an OPERA trim interior with two colours of Nappa leather, Rubis red or black which feature watchstrap-like leather.
OPERA’s elegance is brought to life by the Nappa leather on the front and rear seats, centre console, the door panels and the dashboard covered up to the headlining. The premium central rear armrest and the lounge adjustable head restraints complete look.

The experience is enhanced with an optional 515W FOCAL Electra® sound system, specially developed for DS 9 and benefiting from new stainless-steel tweeter grilles among the fourteen speakers positioned around the cabin for optimum acoustic performance.
The 2.90m wheelbase results in a huge amount of rear passenger space, with the interior of the all-new DS 9 taking comfort and elegance to the next level. Front and rear passengers are able to adjust settings to suit their own preferences. This way, the DS 9 gives new meaning to individual comfort.
The front seats in DS 9 are electrically adjustable and heated as standard. The RIVOLI + trim level includes ventilation and massage function for the front seats, while the optional ‘Lounge Pack’ adds heating, ventilation and massage to rear seats.
The DS 9 is available with two engines from launch. A PureTech 225 features a 225hp 1.6-litre petrol engine with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and is capable of 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds. It also achieves up to 40.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 159g/km.
Alternatively, customers can opt for the E-TENSE plug-in hybrid. Featuring an 11.9kWh battery connected to a 110hp electric motor, a 1.6-litre PureTech petrol engine, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the DS 9 E-TENSE has a total power output of 225hp and 360Nm, of torque. The DS 9 has a fully electric range of 33 miles from a single charge, with the electric motor capable of driving the car in zero emissions mode up to 83mph.
With WLTP-approved CO 2 emissions between 33-35g/km, DS 9 is an ideal solution for fleet drivers, with a BIK rate of just 11%, and a WLTP-approved economy of 177mpg, ensuring running and ownership costs remain low.
Electric mode is always automatically selected on start-up, with drivers able to choose between Hybrid and E-TENSE Sport mode. Hybrid mode seamlessly switches between electric and petrol power, depending on the driving scenario, while E-TENSE Sport gives drivers the maximum combined power from the petrol engine and electric motor. E-TENSE Sport also adjusts the throttle response, gearbox and steering response as well as the active suspension for a more dynamic drive experience.
DS 9 utilises the latest in energy recovery technology. When braking, the kinetic energy from the brakes is used to recharge the battery. This helps improve range by up to 20% when driving in town, while an E-Save function guarantees that there is always some energy left in the battery for zero-emissions driving.
The 7.4Kw on-board charger enables the battery to be fully charged in one hour 45 minutes, with drivers able to use the MyDS smartphone app to confirm their car’s current charge status, charge remaining, as well as control remote charging or precondition the interior.
An additional powertrain, E-TENSE 4x4 360, will be available to order during summer 2021.
To keep drivers, occupants and other road users safe, DS 9 comes with the latest in driver assistance features and safety technologies.
- DS ACTIVE SCAN SUSPENSION
With DS ACTIVE SCAN SUSPENSION, a camera mounted at the top of the windscreen scans the road, while four sensors, and three accelerometers record every movement and transmit them to a computer that can control each wheel independently to improve safety, serenity and improve ride comfort. - DS DRIVE ASSIST
With DS DRIVE ASSIST, DS 9 allows the driver to enjoy semi-autonomous driving which lets them cover distances in the greatest comfort with improved levels of safety. The system uses sensors to position the car precisely in its lane depending on where the driver decides by controlling the steering. Operational up to 111mph (depending on the country’s laws) DS DRIVE ASSIST controls speed and direction, under the driver’s supervision, combining comfort and peace of mind.Controlling the speed is done by adaptive cruise control which oversees driving in traffic jams: the car will restart automatically if it’s stopped for less than three seconds. If it’s stopped for longer, simply pressing a button or the accelerator pedal will see DS 9 move off automatically as the traffic in front moves.
The onboard DS DRIVE ASSIST camera is capable of recognising broken and continuous lines of traffic. While driving, it’s constantly analysing the picture and working out what’s happening, and is operational from 20mph onwards.
- DS PARK PILOT
To help with parking, DS PARK PILOT can detect a parking place when driving at speeds of up to 20mph, and will automatically park the vehicle following instructions from the driver, including reverse or parallel parking.
During long journeys, poor visibility or lack of attention often equal danger. To make driving safer DS SAFETY brings together six major functions: DS NIGHT VISION, DS DRIVER ATTENTION MONITORING, DS ACTIVE LED VISION, blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking and extended traffic sign recognition.
- DS NIGHT VISION
Using infrared camera technology, the DS 9 is capable of detecting pedestrians, cyclists and animals up to 100m ahead in low or poor visibility. The driver gets a picture in infrared on their large digital instrument display and sees danger outlined in yellow, then in red depending on its seriousness.
- DS DRIVER ATTENTION MONITORING
Through an infrared camera mounted above the steering column and a camera at the top of the windscreen, this system continually watches the drivers eyes for signs of fatigue (blinking), their face (where they’re looking) and head movements for distraction, as well as the trajectory of the car over lines on the road, particularly if the driver starts to veer.It can detect any loss of attentiveness by an abnormality in one factor – blinking of the eyes or erratic movements that aren’t in a straight line – and will automatically sound an audible alert while a warning will appear on the central screen, day or night.
- DS ACTIVE LED VISION
The front lighting with DS ACTIVE LED VISION automatically adapts the light beam’s width and range to suit the driving conditions and speed. The light modules feature several modes, including Parking, Town Beam, Country Beam, Motorway Beam and Adverse Weather. The DS 9 also comes with automatically dipping headlights for an even more serene driving experience.

New plug-in hybrid engines for DS 9
Symbolic of the French art of travel, DS 9 shows the utmost sophistication in an elegant saloon which gets two new plug-in hybrid powertrains. These two new power units are available in PERFORMANCE LINE + and RIVOLI + specifications.
Overseen by DS Performance which won every Formula E title in 2019 and 2020, the development and tuning of the power unit and suspension in the DS 9 E-TENSE 4x4 360 have resulted in outstanding performance. The dynamic serenity, popular with DS Automobiles customers, reaches new heights.
DS 9 E-TENSE 4x4 360 uses unique front and rear axles with a wider track. The braking system is uprated with four-piston calipers for better power distribution under heavy application with 380 x 32 mm discs at the front (up by 50 x 2 mm compared with DS 9 E-TENSE 225) and 290 x 12 mm at the rear. As with the championship winning Formula E single seater, mechanical braking effort is only applied if required after energy recovery. The shock absorbers, springs and anti-roll bar are unique, as is the mapping of the power unit. Whatever the specification, DS ACTIVE SCAN SUSPENSION is offered as standard giving the DS9 the hushed comfort of a large saloon with the dynamism of a grand touring coupe.
A four-cylinder 200hp engine and two electric motors, one 110hp (integrated with the gearbox at the front) and the other 113hp (linked to the rear axle), are aided by intelligent four-wheel drive transmission. The 11.9 kWh battery features advanced management to save energy so as to handle different applications.
In zero emissions mode, DS 9 E-TENSE 4x4 360 covers 33 miles on the WLTP combined cycle. With fuel consumption of 157mpg, the homologated CO2 emissions are 43g/km on the WLTP cycle. The top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, with a top electric only speed of 87mph, while the sprint from zero to 62mph takes 5.6 seconds.
In addition to exclusive 20-inch MUNICH alloy wheels and DS PERFORMANCE branded brake calipers, DS 9 E-TENSE 4x4 360 sports DS PERFORMANCE badges at the front and on the bootlid to confirm its identity.
DS Performance along with double Formula E champion Jean-Éric Vergne have developed an exclusive new app to show drivers hot to improve their efficiency. The DS ENERGY COACH app helps drivers to maximise energy regeneration during deceleration, withs scores shown on the central screen.
