Cupra Formentor Review 2024
Cupra Formentor At A Glance
Cupra may have been associated with fast SEATs in the past - but it's making a name for itself and the Cupra Formentor is a really appealing SUV. For starters it's a Cupra, so it has a distinctly sporting flavour to it looks and drive. You're unlikely to see another on the school run, so what's a Cupra Formentor like to own? Read our full review to find out.
We love the coupe-esque SUV styling. Okay, so it's not that practical (if you want that there's the Cupra Ateca) but there's enough room for everyday family use. Cupra has also worked to guve the interior that special feel - and it certainly works. This feels much more than a posh SEAT, with a genuinely premium edge inside - although to be fair, this is dependant on spec.
Top of the range models have leather-clad seats with a quilted design, a new 10-inch floating navigation system and plenty of nice-to-touch metal and leather stitched elements inside. Stick an Audi badge on that steering wheel and you wouldn't know the difference.
Of course being a Cupra, the Formentor is about performance but Cupra has expanded the range to appeal to those that want the looks without all the pace. So yes, there's the top of the range 2.0 TSI 4Drive with 310PS if you want to embarrass the boy racers. But smaller engines are available.
These include a much more sensible 1.5 TSI with 150PS and the Cupra Formentor e-Hybrid - a plug-in hybrid with close to 250PS and an electric range of 36 miles.
Despite its SUV design, the Cupra Formentor feels more like a hot hatch from behind the wheel with excellent body control and responsive steering. Yet it's also surprisingly comfortable with a forgiving ride, making it an excellent all rounder.
The Cupra isn't especially affordable though. List prices start at £28,000 and that's for the entry level 1.5 TSI 150 model. If you want an e-Hybrid you're looking at more than £36k while the all singing and dancing 310PS version starts at an eyebrow raising £41k. That does seem expensive but consider that an Audi RS Q3 starts at £51k...

Cupra Formentor 2024: Handling and ride quality
Despite its SUV raised ride height, the Formentor handles far more like a hot hatch. In fact we can't think of an SUV this side of a Porsche Macan that's as well set up. The steering is nicely weighted and has just the right level of responsiveness, while there's very little body roll even if you throw it into a corner.
It means the Cupra Formentor is far more enjoyable to drive than you may think. Of course this does help if you have the 310PS version, but even the modest 1.5 TSI is still good fun on the twisty bits.
For an SUV (okay a coupe-SUV) it's also impressively agile and feels reassuringly stable wven under quick changes of direction.
Yet for all its hot hatch-ness, the Cupra Formentor is also comfortable. Sit on the motorway at 70mph and it's as smooth and quiet as anything, while the forgiving ride means you can use this as a family car without making the kids feel sick everytime you approach a speed bump or pothole.
Cupra Formentor 2024: Engines
Whereas other Cupra models are performance only, the Formentor breaks with this trend by offering smaller petrols and a plug-in hybrid too. So the cheapest model is the 1.5 TSI 150 - an engine that's used across the Volkswagen Group range. It's a real gem of an engine and has plenty of get-up-and-go while still remaining refined. It comes with a six-speed manual or there's the option of the DSG automatic.
If you want a bit more in the way of performance there's the 2.0 TSI that comes in three powers - 190PS, 245PS and of course the top of the trees 310PS model. All come with DSG as standard.
The 310PS is the real firecracker with a 0-62mph of 4.9 seconds and it strides along with a real punch. It sounds the part too with a lovely burbling exhaust note that turns into a howl at high revs. It really showcases the Formentor at its best.
The plug-in hybrid version, badged e-Hybrid, is an intriguing addition. With just a 1.4 TSI engine, it doesn't scream performance, but using the same system as the Volkswagen Golf GTE, this is combined with an electric motor which combined deliver either 204PS or 245PS.
The e-Hybrid has an electric-only range of up to 37 miles and can be charged from empty to 100 per cent in just three and a half hours using a 3.6 kW AC charger.
Cupra Formentor 2024: Safety
The Cupra Formentor was awarded the maximum five star rating by Euro NCAP for crash safety when it was tested in 2021. Adult occupant safety was rated 93% and child occupant safety at 88%. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injury in the event of a rear-end collision.
The Formentor is available with predictive and adaptive cruise control (ACC) which uses information from the navigation along with the front-mounted camera and Traffic Sign Recognition, allowing it to proactively adjust the cruise speed depending on the road layout ahead – bends, roundabouts, junctions, changes in speed limits and built-up areas.
Cupra Formentor 2024: Towing
If you're towing, chances are a Cupra Formentor ain't going to be high on your list of possible purchases. However, it can tow up to 750kg unbraked and 2000kg braked if you choose the top 310PS version. A towbar pre-installation with a hook costs £790 as an option.

Cupra Formentor 2024: Practicality
Designed as a 'coupe SUV', if such a thing exists, you may think practicality wouldn't be the Cupra Formentor's strong point. But it's actually pretty good when it comes to boot space.
True that coupe-esque profile means there's not as much space as a Cupra Ateca but the Formentor still has 450 litres of carrying space (420 litres for 4Drive models and only 345 litres for the e-Hybrid) with 1475 litres when the rear seats are folded down. A Cupra Ateca has 485 litres.
The deep boot and wide opening mean you can easily fit a pushchair in there and there's more than enough room for a big shop. Even a Christmas one. Ideal for when you've booked your click and collect slot.
The trade off here is that rear legroom isn't great, so it's not the perfect family SUV. With a full size grown up driving and having their seat all the way back, anyone sat behind will find minimal room for knees. It's also a real squeeze for child car seats. But again, if space is your priority, you'll probably be better off with a Cupra Ateca.
Cupra Formentor 2024: Quality and finish
Drive a top of the range Cupra in VZ3 trim and you'll find an interior that can genuinely rival the likes of Audi for quality and finish. There's lots of upmarket metal trim and leather stitched trim on most bits you'll be touching. The quilted leather seats are a real highlight. The design is minimal rather than daring but it feels special nonetheless.
Move down the trim levels and it's not quite as plush though. The entry VZ1 models feel a lot less Audi and a lot more SEAT. That's no bad thing but there's a significant difference the more the pay.
However, there are no complaints about the fit and finish. Everything works with precision and the switches have the usual Volkswagen Group quality feel. It's a very well made interior.
Cupra Formentor 2024: Infotainment
The Cupra Formentor interior is dominated by a whopping big screen that sits in the middle of the dash and controls pretty much everything. It looks good with bright, high resolution graphics and there are endless menus and settings you can play with.
While it looks great the jury is still out on the system itself. This is the same infotainment you'll find on most new generation Volkswagen Group products but despite spending countless hours with it in various different cars, we're yet to be convinced.
It's simply not as intuitive or as user-friendly as the old Volkswagen operating system. Usually at this point we'd say it's just a case of getting used to it, but we think it's simply not that well designed. Simple things like just changing the air con seem overly fiddly. At a time when there's more and more technology in cars, we find this system too distracting.
Cupra Formentor value for money
Cupra Formentor 2024: Prices
Cupra wants to be seen as an upmarket and 'exclusive' brand in its own right, which we suppose explains the high prices. The entry level Cupra Formentor with the 1.5 TSI engine is more than £31k - not far short of a BMW X1.
The Cupra does have value on its side though with a very extensive list of standard equipment for that money. Even V1 models come with pretty much everything you need - even a heated steering wheel on DSG models. You won't be seeing that on your entry-level X1...
There's a big jump if you want the e-Hybrid though, which costs from £39,000. And if you want the all singing and dancing 310PS model, it's an eye watering £44,000 - which is the same as a Volkswagen Golf R.
Cupra Formentor 2024: Running Costs
The most affordable Cupra Formentor to run is, unsurprisingly, the e-Hybrid version, thanks to its 30 mile electric range. This explains its official WLTP economy figure of more than 200mpg (for the lower powered version). Of course, drive further or start putting your foot down and that will soon drop, as with any PHEV.
The petrols aren't any great shakes when it comes to economy, the best being the 1.5 TSI 150 which should see about 40mpg (or 45mpg at a push) but go for the fast 310PS model and you'll be fortunate to see 30mpg.

The Cupra Formentor gets under starter’s orders with the V1 trim. Like all models in the range, it’s well equipped and comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, rain-sensing wipers, and keyless entry. Rear parking sensors help in tight spots. Inside, the V1 has the digital cockpit dash and a 12-inch infotainment screen that works with voice controls and Apple CarPlay. There’s also Cupra Connect to pair with your smartphone. Cloth trim is used for the V1, but there is a leather-clad steering wheel.
The V2 trim ups things with 19-inch wheels, rear view camera and park assist, and electrically folding and heated door mirrors. Black Nappa leather covers the dash and seats, which are heated and electrically adjusted in the front.
The Cupra switches to the VZ trims, beginning with the VZ1 that reverts to cloth upholstery but with front sports seats. This model also benefits from sports suspension, Dynamic chassis control and four driving modes – Comfort, Sport, CUPRA, and Individual. There’s also some added safety gear, such as High Beam Assist, Side Assist, Exit Assist, and Dynamic Road Sign Display.
Move up to the VZ2 and the extra money bags you Black Nappa leather upholster once again, along with heated and electrically adjusted front seats, and a heated steering wheel. For the VZ3, Cupra provides unique copper and black 19-inch alloy wheels, uprated brakes with Brembo calipers, and matrix LED headlights with multi-function camera.

March 2019
Cupra Formentor concept revealed at Geneva Motor Show
Cupra has revealed a close-to-production plug-in hybrid concept SUV at the Geneva Motor Show.
Named after a Spanish peninsula, Cupra insists its Formentor is definitely just a concept car. It looks to be pretty much production-ready though, and we reckon it will go on sale as the firm's halo model as soon as 2020.
SEAT's offshoot, Cupra, went standalone with the recent Cupra Ateca - a sporty version of the popular Ateca crossover.
In terms of design, the Formentor very much looks like a mixture of the Ateca and the new SEAT Tarraco SUV. It's a coupe-crossover, in the same ilk as the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.
The interior is typical Volkswagen Group, aside from the leather-clad bucket seats and new 10-inch floating navigation system, the cabin is filled with dark plastics. Cupra is intended to provide a mix of premium and sportiness, and the Formentor's cabin reflects this.
It'll be powered by a plug-in petrol hybrid engine which produces a combined 245PS. That's less than the Cupra Ateca, but the firm says the Formentor will "surpass the performance expectations of the driver". In typical Volkswagen Group fashion, it gets a DSG automatic gearbox, while an intelligent Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) and differential lock will aid handling.
While performance and fuel economy figures are yet to be confirmed (this is just a concept, remember), Cupra says the Formentor will be able to drive in pure electric mode for up to 31 miles.

Production of the CUPRA Formentor, the first model developed exclusively for the brand, will commence shortly with the first vehicles arriving in the UK in quarter four 2020.
October 2020
Cupra Formentor priced from £27,300
The Formentor is offered in six trim levels, named V1, V2, VZ1, VZ2, VZ3 and VZ Edition. As standard on V1 trim, customers get 18-inch alloy wheels, 12-inch infotainment touchscreen with connected navigation, 10-inch digital driver binnacle, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, Adaptive Cruise Control, wireless smartphone charger, a leather steering wheel and rear parking sensors, all as standard. The name VZ comes from the word ‘Veloz’ in Spanish, translating as ‘Speed’ or ‘Fast’.
To ensure Cupra remains accessible to all, Formentor is available with a 150PS TSI engine, either with a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. Prices will start from £27,300 for the 150PS TSI manual V1 model.
The Cupra Formentor engine line-up is comprised of five outputs, all of which are RDE2 certified. The 1.5-litre TSI engine is available as a 150PS while the 2.0-litre TSI will be offered as a 190PS.
For drivers that want the dramatic design of a CUPRA with eco-conscious performance, the Plug-in Hybrid Variant will be available. A 1.4-litre TSI 150PS petrol engine is paired to a 115PS electric motor, powered by a 13kWh lithium-ion battery pack, can be tuned to either 204PS or 245PS. The eHybrid has a predicted electric-only range of 31miles.
Both the 1.5-litre and 1.4-litre plug-in variants will be available to order in the UK from quarter one 2021.
At the top of the range is the 2.0-litre TSI DSG-auto 4Drive model, generating 310PS of peak power and 400Nm of torque.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain couples a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with a 116PS electric motor and 12.8kWh battery pack. This produces a combined 204PS of power and 330Nm of torque - enough to propel Formentor from 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 127mph.
Formentor e-HYBRID 204PS can be driven up to 37 miles (WLTP) on electric power alone and recharged from 0-100% in 3.5 hours using a 3.6kW AC charger.
Meanwhile, Formentor TSI DSG-auto 4Drive 190 presents customers with an additional powertrain option which incorporates both CUPRA’s 4Drive four-wheel drive system and its renowned 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine. It is available to order in V1 and V2 trims, with prices starting from £32,000 and £33,830 RRP respectively.
The final new addition to the Formentor line-up arrives in the shape of the Formentor TSI DSG-auto 245PS, also utilising the 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine, and available exclusively in VZ1 trim priced from £34,155 RRP.
As standard, V1 trim equips Formentor with 18” Performance machined sport black and silver alloy wheels, tinted rear windows, LED headlights, taillights and dynamic indicators, a digital cockpit and 12” Navigation system with Full Link phone integration, four USB-C sockets, wireless phone charging, interior ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, sports seats with copper stitching, copper and aluminium interior detailing, rear parking sensors, driving profile selection, Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control, keyless entry and start, dynamic road sign display and high beam assist.

The refreshed Formentor features revisions to the front end, LED headlights and an illuminated logo positioned in the centre of the rear light. New 18 and 19-inch wheel designs and new paint colours are also offered.

The Cupra Formentor engine line-up has also been revised. Entry level models are powered by a 150PS 1.5 petrol, with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearbox.
