The Versys 650cc is very beginner-friendly and versatile. It'll do more or less whatever you need it to, from weekly commuting to weekend rides and touring. And, despite being a 650, it's plenty quick enough unless you're planning to chase down superbikers.
If you're planning to carry a pillion on long trips or on a very regular basis the Versys 1000 is a better buy, but the 650 is still fine with someone on the back. There aren't too many bad points, but the engine is a bit characterless compared to the engines in the MT-07 Tracer or the Suzuki V-Strom 650.
