What's wrong with my Mercedes-Benz's gearbox?

I have a 2000 320CDI Mercedes-Benz estate with 175,000 miles, owned from new. The latest problem is with the automatic gearbox. It won't go from park to drive unless you stop and start several times, and then will only stay in second gear. Any ideas what this might be and should I go to the dealer?
