I've bought a MINI Cooper with a gearbox fault - am I covered under consumer protection for the cost of repairs?
I've just purchased a MINI Cooper 54 plate, costing me £6299 from a small dealer. I have finance on the £6000, and have paid £299 cash. I bought it on Saturday. It went for a service on the Monday and was taken by the dealer to MINI, who discovered a slight leak of gearbox oil coming from passenger side driveshaft. They thought it would just be the seal, so the dealer booked it into the garage at no cost to me, because the car has a three-month warranty. I was then told that the garage would replace both driveshaft seals. They had the car for three days and in that time they fitted the seals, which they then said would only last around six months as they didn't fit correctly, so the dealer asked for them to fit correct seals. They ordered the seals from BMW, and they fitted them, and then again, they said they weren't correct. They called BMW and they sent a BMW specialist (apparently) and he said the gearbox is BMW and not Rover, which is seen in most MINI Coopers. So, once again they fit the 'correct' seals and sent it back to me.
I got it to work, parked it up for three hours and then there was a big puddle of oil under the car. My dad checked it over once I got it home and he said it's leaking from the gearbox again. The car has been picked up this morning and taken back to the garage who are now looking at the car. I've just read my consumer rights. Will I be covered for any problems that might arise after they've "fixed" the car once again?

You are probably covered with any issue relating to the gearbox and seals if it fails within six months, but I would seriously consider putting a full warranty on the car so you have a bit more peace of mind. Honest John recommends Warranty Direct and I have had a good experience in dealing with them when there are repair problems.
