What's wrong with my 1997 Ford Fiesta's tailgate release?

My 1997 Ford Fiesta Ghia's tailgate release no longer works. The red alarm light stays on constantly, but the door open indication light on the dash does not work. My husband has checked the fuses, which are all working fine, and the car drives well. I have noticed that this model has remote central locking. I only got two keys with the car - a red one, and one black coded key with the red bit at the top. I never had a remote key for the car. Can anyone help?

The door open indicator is on because the hachback is not properly closed. Could something be jammed in the lock?
