I have been accused of a road traffic accident that I was never in - what do I do?
I've been accussed of a road traffic accident, in which I was allegedly involved. After a few calls with my insurance company, I found out that accident happened almost 8 months ago and 100 miles from the place, that my car has been left or used. I explained to the insurance company that somebody is making a false claim (including neck injury) and said that I haven't been involved in any accidents at all in my life. I said that somebody is making a false claim and it should be reported to the police or I said I'll do it myself. Representative of the company asked me if I still own that car, but I answered that I sold it (and it's true) and that's why I cancelled my insurance with them (obviously fake claim date is before I sold it). They said it might be a mistake and they will ask for more details from a third party. After two days I rang them again as I found out that my car on that day was at a local garage. All they said that they don't need anything from me as the case has been settled and only that I might be contacted by a third party. No explanation or apologies for the stress they caused me. The question would be - does 'the case been settled' mean that they paid some money to a third party (in only about 3.5 days)? And why the third party will need to contact me if I had insurance company who should deal on my behalf? Now I have another car that is insured with different insurance company. How can it affect my premium and what are next steps to prove that I never been involved in any accident?

Ask your insurer to confirm in writing whether the claim has been settled or not on your policy. And if so that you will report them for participating in a fraud against you. Ask them to provide all correspondence of the allegations from the third party representative or insurer. Did you own the vehicle when the alleged accident occurred? Was the vehicle insured in your name when the alleged incident happened or had you cancelled it at that point? Based on what you have said, yes it does mean your insurance company have settled without your authority in the 3-5 days, hence why you need to do the above. If a claim has been made, it will affect future premiums. You need to complain to your past insurer, and the FOS. www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/consumer/complaints...m
