Should I buy a petrol Volkswagen Golf VII Estate 1.4 TSI?

I've decided to trade my Volkswagen Golf TDI for a petrol version for DPF and EGR reasons (I do too much city driving). I'm considering a 2014 Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI estate, but have heard bad things...

I do very low mileage and short journeys, should I get a hybrid?

In the main, I only drive twice a day for 1.3 miles each way. Should I keep the Lexus IS 2.5 V6 petrol or swap to a small petrol car, or even a hybrid like the Toyota Yaris?

Is 7mpg normal for a 2005 Mercedes-Benz A-Class?

I just bought a 2005 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Elegance SE automatic 134PS. So far I've done 45 miles and already used £40 of fuel. Is this normal? I drive in the city.
