My Vauxhall Meriva suffered an engine fault after a hose came loose - is the selling dealer liable?

I bought a 2005 Vauxhall Meriva in March this year. The car recently died on me, so I coasted off the road. The temperature looked ok. I saw steam or smoke coming from under the bonnet. I lifted it to check and the radiator was empty, despite having topped it up the night before. The breakdown recovery driver said that the hose at the back, that runs from the radiator, had popped off! After putting water in the radiator the car still didn't start, so I am wondering if this has caused further damage.

I took it to the garage and spoke with the mechanic, who said that the cylinder head had water in it. I mentioned the hose and the clip, but he said that it doesn't matter where the clip is. I bought the car from Vauxhall in March, with a 12-month warranty and apparently it had a full service a couple days before it became mine. Surely this hose was overlooked? My warranty cover is £600 and I am led to believe that the repairs will be way past this!

If you bought the car in March from a Vauxhall dealer then the Vauxhall dealer is responsible. In law any fault that occurs within six months of purchase is taken to have been developing on the date of sale, and this is obviously such a fault so the dealer is responsible for it and its consequences.
