Should my mother buy a Volkswagen Golf 1.6 or a Ford Focus 1.6?

My 60-year-old mother is going to buy a new car and is trying to decide between an automatic Volkswagen Golf 1.6 and an automatic Ford Focus 1.6. I drive a Volkswagen Polo, which is great for me as I'm in my 30s (it's got lots of kick when you need it). I need to offer her some advice but I'm worried that the Volkswagen might be a bit racey for her conservative needs. Any advice?

A Golf 1.6 automatic racey? No way. But the suspension might be a bit too hard for her. Are you talking used here or new? The current Focus is at the end of its model life. The Golf 1.6 engine has been supplanted by the much better 1.4TSI 122 and 1.2TSI 105.
