Do I have to pay a speeding fine from our holiday in Spain?
We have been sent a letter with photos from Ministerio Del Interior Leon Spain about a speeding fine we seem to have incurred whilst driving in Menorca. The date quoted is when we were in the area of Menorca. Trading Standards have confirmed that the website we were asked to use to pay the fine (www.dgt.es) is genuine, but when we try to pay our computer tells us not to proceed as "the security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority." We have written to the Spanish address asking for a translation and an alternative method of payment. They have replied, ignoring both requests but just asking us to pay via the dgt.es website. This request was in Spanish and English.
By coincidence, I saw an article in The Times newspaper by Philip Pank, Transport Correspondent, about lost funding for speed cameras which states in the penultimate paragraph campaigners are pressing for a change in international law to allow drivers caught speeding to face prosecution at home. At present, automated speed camera fines cannot follow you home. Do we have to pay?
