Should I get petrol, diesel or hybrid?

Looking to buy next car, needs to have good fuel economy and be relatively cheap to insure and tax. I do mostly town driving (to and from work, 16 mile round trip), a dozen or so motorway journeys a year. I've only ever driven manual and petrol. I can't decide between a Toyota Prius 3rd Gen (2010-) or a Honda Civic 9th Gen (2011-). Which would you recommend?

For this sort of use hybrid is best. Prius or Auris hybrid or Auris Touring Sport hybrid.
