Scirocco 1.4 TSI engine fault - should Volkswagen replace FOC?

I am looking for some advice. My 1.4 TSI petrol Scirocco has an engine issue. The issue is with low compression in cylinder one, a further check has identified that the engine may have been running too lean and melted the piston. The car is 6.5 years old and done 29,500 miles. They have estimated that to replace all of the pistons I will have to contribute £1400 towards the repair and if worst case scenario the engine needs to be replaced my contribution is £3500.

I do not feel that getting 29,500 out of an engine is acceptable, I have found that this is a common issue with 1.4 TSI engines. I feel that the sale of good act 2015, which states the good must be fit for purpose and of quality, this engine isn't fit for purpose. As it was a manufacturer issue that has caused the fault. Do I have any recourse to push for Volkswagen to replace the engine free of charge?

It has happened on 1.4 TSIs, but it is more common in Twinchargers. Check all the VAG entries in www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar for VAG cars that have this engine. The most complaints are for the Golf Mk VI: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/volkswagen/golf-vi-2.../

Unfortunately at six and a half years old you're not protected. The Sale of Goods Act and subsequent legislation and case law generally regards six years as a "reasonable life" for the major components of a consumer durable such as a motor car.
