Why is my Jeep Cherokee ticking from the top of the engine?

I've got ticking from the top of my 1995 Jeep Cherokee 2.5 turbodiesel's engine. What could it be?

This VM engine probably has a modular (multi-piece) cylinder head and one of the gaskets has gone. Or the valvegear needs adjusting.
