Buying a used hatchback- Mazda 3 or Volvo V40?

I'm considering buying a used car. I would like something from 2012 onwards and have seen a V40 and a Mazda 3. Both would be a petrol engine. In your opinion, which is the better all round car?

The Mazda 3 by a long way. Get the petrol 165PS version.

Comfortable and enjoyable to drive, a good (if rather confusing) range of engines, fabulous record on safety.
