How good is the Honda HR-V?

I am looking to downsize from my Honda CR-V. A petrol automatic is essential and I am considering buying a Honda HR-V, which seems to be a good step down without getting to small. I have read a number of reviews on the car with most reviewers slating the CVT gearbox; however, I am mindful that some journalists are not keen CVTs in general.

I have also been a little disappointed with the firmness of the ride of the HR-V and have read with great interest HJ's report about lowering tyre pressures which improve comfort. I was under the impression that keeping tyre pressures at manufacturers recommended levels was essential for safety and handling etc and so would love to know if dropping the tyre pressures as HJ did has any disadvantages, particularly in terms of safety and handling.

That's all covered here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/honda/honda-hr-v-2.../ You're right. Many keen drivers cannot abide CVT transmissions. I try to take a more balanced view based on what my readers have repeatedly told me they want. Long-term reports of my HR-V diesel here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/our-cars/honda-hr-v/

Switching to Michelin Cross Climates and dropping the cold pressures to 31psi all round made a very significant difference to my HR-V. Pressures increase by 2psi as soon as the tyres heat up and can increase by 4psi on a long summer motorway trip. In ,000 miles my Cross Climates have hardly worn at all.
