Buying a used 4x4 for £5000 - what should I buy?

I'm looking to buy a used four-wheel drive vehicle with a budget of anything up to £5000. I don't need off-road capability but I do use some remote roads which go untreated in winter conditions. What might you suggest I buy?

Tyres are more relevant than four-wheel drive in the conditions you describe. Better to get a FWD car on Michelin Cross Climate tyres than think you need a 4x4. That opens up your options. Avoid VAG DSGs and Nissan CVTs.
