What's the best used family car?

I need a used car - ideally the smallest and cheapest to buy and run for three children. What would you recommend?

The children will grow, of course, and three child seats across need more width then you get in a supermini. If buying old, hard to beat a Citroen Xsara Picasso 2.0HDI. 5 separate sliding seats, massive luggage space and up to 50mpg with no DPF to worry about.
