Which diesel car should I buy?

I am looking to purchase a new vehicle and am aware of the potential problems with diesels. I do about 18,000 miles a year which comprises a daily commute of seven miles each way and several much longer journeys. I am concerned that the daily commute may harm the engine even though my overall mileage would suggest diesel to be the best.

My short list is Volvo V40 D4 R Design, VW Golf GTD and VW Scirocco 2.0tdi 150. Looking to buy one up to six months old and keep it long term (100k+ miles). Would any of those engines be a bad choice for my mileage? If so, could you suggest a more suitable engine?

thank you

The Volvo 2.0 litre DriveE 182PS engine is the best here. I averaged 60mpg over 8000 miles with it in a bigger S60 on Shell V-Power Nitro Plus (it needs that fuel).

No problems with the EA288 2.0TDI in thew Golf, but the Scirocco may be fitted with the earlier EA189, subject to recall this year, and I wouldn't want that under my bonnet.

Comfortable and enjoyable to drive, a good (if rather confusing) range of engines, fabulous record on safety.
