What's the shortest period I can tax a car for?

I have an MX5, - date of first registration in the UK 2005, and I need to tax and insure it for the shortest possible time in order to get it checked over before sale and to allow potential buyers to test drive. What is the shortest time for which I can pay for the vehicle to be road-taxed? Any help much apreciated.
