What's causing our Volkswagen Sharan to lose power?

We bought a 2005 Volkswagen Sharan automatic. It has done 121,000 miles on the clock, whilst we have only had it around one month and have had a service on it. The problem we are experiencing is that when the car is doing 40 or 50 mph it starts slowing down as if it uses up all it energy. We went on the motorway for the first time and it wouldn't go over 50 or 60. What could the problem be?

Possibly a stuffed oxygenating catalytic converter blocking the exhaust system, so the car cannot exhale properly.
