What to replace a Golf with?

Looking for a car to replace an S-reg Golf GTD TD and am totally confused by too many choices in a smaller car. I've been looking at Fiat 500, Volkswagen Up, Nissan Micra, Honda Jazz, Suzuki Grand Vitara. I would like to have sat nav, climate control, petrol engine, good mileage per gallon, cheap to run and service, some get up and go on motorway, safety features. Big things in a small package. Prefer hatchback to saloon as need to transport large dog from time to time. Use is mainly on a Scottish island but sometimes travel to mainland on motorways for journeys to Manchester area.

The new Vitara S 1.4T promises a lot. 4WD, 140PS 1.4 Turbo engine. 127g/km CO2. 50mpg. But £21,500. FIAT 500 are cute and have by far the best front seats of any small car, but aren't the best handling small cars unless you go for the Abarth on 16-inch (not 17-inch) wheels. MINIs are lots of fun, even the new MINI One. Honda Jazz are practical with the roomiest, most versatile interior of any small car. In UK CVT7 spec they are economical, but slow. Try a MINI One.
