Buying a new car – what would you recommend?

My car was recently written off in an accident where someone went into the back of me. My car was a 2002 Vauxhall Corsa Elegance 1.2. If my budget was around £2500-£3000 for a replacement, what would you recommend would be a good, reliable vehicle to go for? I'd ideally be looking for something of similar size around five years old.
