Buying a new hatchback

My wife wants to buy her first car as she got the driving licence just last week. She has a automatic only licence. What do you recommend? We are thinking of a Mazda3, Hyundai i30 or even a Mercedes A-Class.

The Mazda 3 is the nicest to drive and has the best automatic transmission. I'd choose that over an i30, even though the i-30 has a similar 6-speed torque converter auto. The new, revamped A-Class is about to arrive, but has dual clutch auto boxes. The Qashqai is CVT only and the 1.2 TCe 120 is not really up to it.
