Engine issues when petrol low

I have a BMW 116 2006 model where everything seems to be fine until petrol is low the symptoms start to show. First the engine management light will come on and than there will be a loss of power on acceleration. After filling it up with petrol again they seem to disappear again. Any ideas what it might be?

Reads to me like contaminated petrol. When you get to the dregs in the tank you start to have problems. Alternatively, the fuel pick-up in the tank could be loose and starts to float when it is not submerged with fuel.
