Is it time to change my MG ZT, and what to?

I have an MG ZT-T 2L diesel auto estate with 130,000 miles on the clock. Last year I had two expensive bills and now my air conditioning is playing up. It has checked out OK on refrigerant charge, but is blowing cold then hot without me changing anything, and it is now suggested I try having the pressure switch changed, but I have not been quoted a price yet. I do not want to throw good money after bad, so I wondered whether you had any advice?

If it is time to change, can you recommend a comfortable (I'm six feet tall and 15 stone), more fuel and tax efficient alternative, with an automatic gearbox? I do 12,000 miles per year, mostly journeys of 25 miles with an occasional French trip, and sometimes have to carry large-ish loads. My wife and I are both retired, and sometimes carry passengers.

I can borrow £7000 and add perhaps £4000 plus whatever we can get on the MG. What is the best way to sell the MG, bearing in mind that I can't sell it until we have another car? Or should I consider a new car on a personal lease, or wouldn't I get a one with my small income and personal pensions? It is very confusing to know what is the best option.

It might be the electromagnetic clutch on the compressor, a comparatively simple and cheap repair that should not be more than about £200. A lot less than £1000 for a new compressor. If you can get it fixed I'd be inclined to keep the car.
