Buying a new car for someone with dodgy back and knees

Dear Honest John

Please can you help? I drive a Passat Sport Bluemotion Tech TDI 2.0l, 12 plate. I love the car but am plagued by a bad back and dodgy knees and the entrance/exit and driving position are just too uncomfortable and low for me now. The time has now come for me to cater to my back rather than ignore it for the pleasure of the drive.

I’d like to know your thoughts on cars with good seats for driving with a back issue please. Our other car is a freelander 2 which is good for both backs and the potholed lane we live down. The attraction of the Passat was it’s size (I’m not a fan of small cars), solidity and reliability and especially the fuel economy on long motorway runs.

I’d really appreciate your thoughts. Budget is a flexible 15-20k. To give you an idea of previous cars in the past I’ve driven mondeos and passats (liked a lot), and before that a honda accord (ok but not thrilling) and a vectra (not impressed).

Thank you so much, as ever

Better a Honda CR-V than a Freelander 2. More comfortable and more reliable. But if you can do a deal and get a VW Golf SV (preferably with the 1.4TSI engine) within budget then that's worth considering.
