Are used Volkswagen Polos reliable?

I need to replace my ageing Honda Concerto, because parts are now unobtainable. I am looking at a Volkswagen Polo 1.4 SE auto to replace it and have found one for £2000, which is close to the top end of my budget.

However, I have read from your column in The Telegraph that used Volkswagens can be beset with mechanical problems, is this one of them? If so, which other car five-door hatchback auto should I consider?

Yes. Go for a Toyota Yaris 1.0 or 1.3 litre 4-speed torque converter automatic instead.
