What's causing my Renault Laguna to screech when I accelerate?

I just bought a Renault Laguna Dynamiqe 1.8 and have noticed a screeching sound coming from the engine when I accelerate - can you let me know what it might be?

Probably the alternator. But might be a timing belt pulley.
