Accelerator problems with Toyota Avensis
I have had some accelerator problems with my 2002 Toyota Avenis 1.6 petrol. When the car is cold the accelerator jumps massively during gear changes, specifically when I engage the clutch. The revs can go up to 6000rpm and hold for 5-10 seconds at each time.
I have tried to get this problem fixed with a local mechanic but have had no joy. I am looking to sell the car but do not want to pass this problem onto another driver as it could be very dangerous. Any ideas?

Well given what you have described we would check the following.
1. Throttle valve. sticking/linkage/housing
2. Throttle Position sensor.
3. Engine Coolant temp sensor ( ECT)
4. Volume air Flow sensor ( VAF)
This is on the assumption that you have checked all air/vacuum pipes/ connections, and also the air filter.
