Engine light on - what does it mean?

What is the function of the engine symbol indicator light in the dash board ?
Is urgent attention required, The engine and car show no visual problems

Different meaning in different cars. But if it is indicating low oil pressure than you are in deep trouble and need to get it to a garage quickly because the oil pump has probably failed. Nothing to do with oil level. Everything to do with oil pressure.
