Why have my parking sensors stopped working?

The parking sensors on my 2008 Ford Mondeo have stopped workong. If I engage them manually it just makes a beeping noise and the parking sensor button on the dash just flashes. When I put the car in reverse it does the same. Any ideas?

Maybe gummed up with dirt, maybe short circuited, maybe simply reached the end of their lives. Might actually just be one of them affecting all the others.
