Need a cheap family car with low running costs
My father is looking to replace his 2003 Ford Focus next year. Previously he's always had cheap used cars, but I'm trying to persuade him to get something slightly better this time. However, he's not willing to spend a huge amount - probably not more than £4000/
He's very conscious about running costs and would prefer something with slightly more room in the back. I've suggested a 2007 Skoda Octavia 1.9TDI but he thinks that costs and parts are going to be higher. He's also concerned that things like tyres will be much more expensive.
Can you suggest any good options to consider alongside the Octavia? He's not a fan of Vauxhall but otherwise isn't too fussy.

Octavia 195/65 R15 or 205/55 R16 tyres are the same price as Focus tyres. The 1.9 is the 'safest' engine and there should be no diesel particulate filter to worry about. But vital to check that the Octavia you buy is not a clocked taxi. Otherwise a KIA cee'd or Hyundai i30 1.6CRDI.
