Will an automatic car wash damage my car's paintwork?

I've been told that automatic tunnel carwashes (those with rolling brushes) damage the coating and lacquer of the paint. Is this true?

Yes. If you want to avoid damage to the paint use a jetwash. Most carwashes have these too.
