Blind spot mirror malfunction - what's the cause?

My Jaguar XF has an electronic blind spot warning system fitted to the wing mirrors.The light on the drivers mirror has started to come on randomly when there is no vehicle behind. How does this system work and is it repairable?

I would guess that moisture has got into the sensor or into the light.
