Should I replace my unreliable Golf with a Nissan Qashqai or Toyota Avensis?

My 08 2.0TDI GT Sport Golf which I bought, believing Volkswagens are reliable, is now going into the local dealer for a second time to investigate a problem where the diesel drains back into the fuel tank. I've had it with so-called quality cars, a BMW 3 Series that had a blown turbo at 27,000 miles and the new shape Tourer with runflats and the most uncomfortable seats, ever meaning a hard and uncomfortable ride, and now the Golf.

I've narrowed the replacements down to two cars which are both ex-demonstrators. The new Nissan Qashqai 1.5 DCI Tekna or a Toyota Avensis T4 tourer with sat nav and reversing camera. I'm looking for reliability and ease of driving, with the ability to carry grandchildren and all their paraphernalia. The Qashqai cost to change is £7000, whereas the Avensis is £6000. I'm also hoping to hang on to them for a few years. Any advice comments would be appreciated.

If the Avensis is the new 1.8 or 2.0 Valvematic then that is an excellent, near state-of-the-art engine.

Comfortable and quiet on the move, enjoyable to drive. Nicely trimmed with great attention to detail. 1.4 TSI sweeter to drive than a diesel.
