Bad time to buy diesel?

After a long and frankly exhausting search for a car to replace my under powered and noisy 2006 Ford Focus Estate 1.6 auto, I have settled on the Mercedes-Benz C class estate. The best example I have found is an 09 reg C220CDi Sport auto with 40,000 miles. The engine seems to suit the car better than the petrol C180k which I also drove.

However after reading some recent articles regarding the future of diesel and the possible financial implications implied in that, I'm wondering if it's a bad time to buy a diesel?

From what I can tell the engine in question is Euro 4 compliant (not 100% sure about this). Can I expect to be offered nothing for it in a few years and will it become as unpopular as smoking in public to own a diesel as the 'great' Boris Johnson is suggesting? Or should I buy the diesel and enjoy it while I can?

If it has a diesel particulate filter that could be trouble in the future. Basically car manufacturers have been forced by the EC to produce cars that emit ever lower CO2 and the fuel that does that best is diesel. Now the EC is turning round and saying diesel is bad.
