What's the best used car for £4000?

I'm looking to buy a used car on a budget of £4000. I will be doing about 12,000 miles a year - 40 miles a day on my commute along an A-road to work - and it's unlikely I'll be taking any passengers.

Obviously, I want something reliable, but fuel economy is my main priority. So far I've been recommended a Kia Cee'd, but I think it's too big and too expensive for what I need. I've also looked at Kia Rios but think they will be too expensive. What do you suggest?

You'll get close to 55mpg with a Citroen C1, Peugeot 107 or Toyota Aygo and they are very reliable, cheap to maintain and cheap to insure. If you can find one from 2012 or later, they're also free annual tax.
