What should I replace my old Auris with?
I'm looking to replace my Toyota Auris diesel. I'm not sure I want another diesel as I only average 44mpg on my 40 mile each way motorway return. My wife has a Ford Fiesta EcoBoost, which is fantastic and I can manage 50-55 mpg in my commute but is out of my budget.
I've bought new cars in the past and I feel they are a waste of money. My main requirements are a car under four years old that has five-doors, air con, ESP and a reasonable boot. It needs to be more comfortable than the Auris (can't be hard) and return 45mpg at least. I have a budget of £8000. I was thinking a Honda Civic 1.8. Do you have any other suggestions?

A Civic 1.8iES is a very good idea. Real mpg puts them at 40.6mpg, but I got 45mpg and you probably will driving mostly motorway. Very spacious. Steers and handles decently. Extremely reliable chain cam engine.

Practical and comfortable cabin, huge amounts in interior space, great 2.2 i-CTDi diesel engine, well built and reliable, enjoyable to drive.
Decent combination of ride and handling that might suit some people better than a harder sprung Golf or a Civic. A few inches taller than a Golf of Focus so easier to get in and out.
