Can you recommend a used car that's suitable for family use?

We need a reliable used family car. We cover 12,000 miles a year, which is mainly on motorways. I’ve got £5000 to spend and am thinking Honda Civic. Can you offer any advice?

The 2006 - 2012 Civic 1.8iES is very commodious and can be surprisingly economical. I've has 45mpg out of them on long trips.
