Overheating 2001 Astra - what's wrong?

I have a 2001 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 8v. I have had a few problems, all now sorted, but since I've had the ECU fixed I now seem to be running hot. The coolant tank has red water and no oil, but the two pipes seem to blow air into it. Also, I have that smell of over heating and sometimes it seems to be a bit slow (well slower than normal). I have no sludge in the oil, but is this a sign of the head gasket on its way out?

May be an airlock. May be that the thermostat is seized shut.
